Job Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Program Manager or Recreation Activities Coordinator, the Recreation Instructor/Coach is responsible for the implementation and supervision of ‘R’ Recreation community recreational opportunities.

Positions Available

The college is looking for individuals who wish to coach in any one of a variety of sports or other recreational activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Engage in the recreational activity by planning the event activities.

2. Work directly with both the recreation assistants and participants in the event through instruction, demonstration, or assistance of a skill or project.

3. Interact in a positive manner with both recreation assistants and participants prior to, during and after the event.

4. Supervise and mentor recreation assistants assigned to the activity.

5. Answer general questions regarding recreational opportunities through ‘R’ Recreation.

6. Operate within the ‘R’ Recreation Standards of Operation and Employee Expectations and the guidelines set forth in the College’s policies, procedures and practices.

7. Perform other reasonably related duties as directed or assigned.

Position Specifications/Minimum Qualifications:

Education

High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience

Three years in-depth experience with the activity hired to instruct/coach and be able to demonstrate a leadership capabilities and mastery of skill. Prior experience working with children in a leadership role is required.

Licenses and Certifications

Possess and maintain first aid and CPR certification (or ability to be certified prior to the start of the first event/activity). Subject to appropriate or required background screening to establish eligibility to work with children under the age of 18.

Equivalency Statement Equivalent combinations of education, experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

1. Advanced knowledge of area hired to instruct/coach.

2. Ability to supervise recreation assistants assigned to activity.

3. Knowledge of safety and proper use of equipment.

4. Ability to work well with a diverse group of people in a professional, helpful manner.

5. Ability to communicate and interact in a professional manner.

6. Ability to maintain a professional and respectful image.

7. Ability to problem solve and answer questions.

8. Exhibit enthusiasm and energy in interaction with participants, parents, and staff.

9. Ability to follow instructions and procedures.

10. Ability to exercise patience and adapt to change quickly.

Level of Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Activities Coordinator or Recreation Program Manager.

Work Environment / Environmental Conditions

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Evening and weekend work may be required.

Physical Demands/Requirements

EQUIPMENT USED: Frequent use of sporting equipment and equipment necessary to facilitate and event.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to move, assemble and handle sport and event equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
